  4. Air Canada rescues Continental, as U.S. carriers protest a British
  5. plan

  8.     No other major U.S. airline has successfully emerged from
  9. bankruptcy proceedings. But thanks to Air Canada, battered and
  10. bruised Continental is about to do the unthinkable -- complete
  11. a bankruptcy restructuring for the second time in 10 years. The
  12. two carriers have struck a deal that will give Air Canada part
  13. ownership and access to Continental's American routes, in
  14. exchange for a much needed $450 million infusion of cash.

  16.     The deal is the latest in a flurry of international
  17. partnerships being formed as the world's airlines shoot it out
  18. for passengers. By far the most controversial is USAir's plan
  19. to sell a 44% stake to British Airways for $750 million. The
  20. transatlantic combo would rank as one of the three biggest
  21. airlines in the world, linking 339 destinations in 71 countries.
  22. Most alarming to U.S. carriers, the arrangement would give
  23. British Airways, one of the world's strongest carriers,
  24. unlimited access to American markets. President-elect Bill
  25. Clinton and Ross Perot joined the chorus of alarm during the
  26. campaign. Said American Airlines chairman Robert Crandall: "What
  27. will happen is, the good jobs will go to London and the baggage
  28. handlers will stay here."
